US president Biden discusses Afghanistan with UAE, Spanish leaders

Biden has calls with Crown Prince Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

NEW YORK – US President Joe Biden and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan discussed Afghanistan evacuations on Saturday in a telephone call.

The White House said Biden expressed appreciation for support from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the ongoing evacuation from Afghanistan of US citizens, diplomatic staff, partner nations and vulnerable Afghan nationals.

The two leaders underlined that the collaborative effort reflects the enduring partnership between the US and the UAE.

They agreed on the priority of working together to address regional and global challenges.

Separately, Biden and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez discussed the latest developments in Afghanistan in another call.

The US president thanked Sanchez for Spain’s leadership in rallying international support for Afghan women and girls and Spain’s assistance in temporarily housing Afghans at risk at military bases in Rota and Moron who are bound for the US.

The Taliban seized control of Afghanistan after taking Kabul on Aug. 15, forcing the president and other top officials to leave the country.

The unexpected power grab triggered a rush to flee Afghanistan, including civilians who assisted foreign soldiers or groups and now fear Taliban retribution.
