US Policy Towards Pakistan ‘not working’

By Shahid Qureshi –

Few years ago a high level Pakistani military delegation was visiting USA at the invitation of the US Government when a member of the delegation on a local flight said something like, ‘I am going to have long sleep, when I get there’. A paranoid white European American passenger overheard this and reported to the air staff, who reported to the ground Homeland Security. The members of the Pakistani military delegation introduced themselves and told the security staff that, ’they are invited by the US Government and are officers of the Pakistan Army’, but over paranoid yankees wouldn’t listen.

The officers contacted the GHQ (General Headquarters) in Pakistan and were told to ‘return home’. US Government did try to do some damage control but this new breed of Pakistani officers replied, “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn”, following the line from the 1939 film ‘Gone with the Wind’ starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh.

Nick Fielding from The Guardian, London and a senior journalist from Canada who worked in Afghanistan for some times and were travelling with me in Kazakhstan for Eurasia Media Forum 2017 in Astana. He told us something like ‘hundreds of US soldiers come to Afghanistan have four meals a day, do some shopping on Thursdays with security cleared local Afghans and go back home without stepping outside the base’. This is how US is fighting war in Afghanistan costing taxpayers US$7 billion a month.

Well according to an assessment only 3% insurgency in Afghanistan is linked with Pakistan and that is only due to the presence of over 2.5 million Afghan refugees who are frequently travel back and forth. But US need someone to blame for its failures be it Vietnam or Afghanistan. Indian – US policy to sandwich Pakistan since 2001 was full on. The real agenda was to have a India friendly government in Pakistan (which Asif Zardari and Nawaz Sharif were since 2008 – 2018) and anti-Pakistan Government in Afghanistan.

US allowed India to have special relations with Iran and import oil violating the US sanctions as well as take control of Iranian port of Chabhar. On the other hand Iran allowed India to build a road from Chabhar into Afghanistan as an alternative NATO supplies route.

The whole agenda is anti-China, anti – CPEC and anti-Pakistan. On the other hand Pakistan has made new friends in Central Asia and Russia, Pakistani Army Chief General Qamar Bajawa’s visit to Russia and joint exercise of Russian special forces with Pakistan a step in the right direction.

Without dealing with the internal Pakistani ‘foreign assets’ who actually make the foreign agenda succeed all the above would be useless. So what happened with the Supreme Court’s case about the ‘foreign nationals’ senior civil servants in the Pakistani Bureaucracy, including police and intelligence Bureau?  Well these are the rent boys and girls who actually deliver.
