Prince Harry to begin tour of Chile

Prince Harry will pay his respects to Chile’s first head of state and meet the country’s President Michelle Bachelet as his three-day tour of the nation begins today.

Harry, who has spent the past four days visiting neighbouring Brazil, will lay a wreath at a monument to Bernardo O’Higgins who helped free the country from Spanish rule during the 19th century.

Later the Prince will call on Ms Bachelet at the La Moneda presidential palace in the capital Santiago.

Harry will also join a group of young children at a kindergarten that teaches underprivileged youngsters.

In Chile pre-school education is provided by the National Kindergarten Board and the Integra Foundation, which is one of the president’s official foundations.

During the day a special forces unit will welcome Harry, a serving British Army captain, to their base outside Santiago and he will meet with officers and soldiers and be briefed on their roles and military capabilities.

To end the day the Prince will attend an evening reception marking the Queen’s official birthday hosted by Britain’s Ambassador to Chile and give a short speech.
