New Pakistani envoy in London meets APPG at Parliament

(London Post – PR) H.E. Syed Ibne Abbas, Pakistan High Commissioner for UK met All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Pakistan in the House of Commons today. Mr Andrew Stephenson MP who is also the Chair of the APPG, welcomed the High Commissioner to the British Parliament and expressed his government’s desire to work together with him in future. The other Members of Parliament who participated in the meeting included Mr Stuart Andrew, Ms Karen Lumley, Mr Eric Ollerenshaw, Rehman Chishti and Mr Richard Fuller.

Matters of mutual interest and issues related to the Pakistanis living in the UK were discussed during the meeting. Both sides deliberated upon ways and means to further strengthen the existing friendly relations between the two countries and agreed to foster linkages between the Parliaments of their respective countries.

Mr Andrew Stephenson MP said that it was one of the biggest objectives of Prime Minister David Cameron’s government to promote trade relations between the two countries. He assured his government’s full support in bringing investment to Pakistan as well as achieving the trade target of £3 billion by 2015 set by the Prime Ministers of Pakistan and the UK.

The High Commissioner thanked Mr Stephenson for inviting him to the British Parliament and providing an opportunity to interact with the Honourable Parliamentarians. He conveyed to the Group greetings from Chairman Senate and Speaker National Assembly of Pakistan and hoped their visit would be reciprocated from the British side as well. The High Commissioner said that there was a great potential for the two Parliaments to cooperate and our Parliamentarians could benefit from the best British Parliamentary practices. He added that he was looking forward to working closely with the APPG on Pakistan to carry forward the mutual agenda of forging further close and friendly relations with the UK.

The High Commissioner emphasized that enhancing Pakistan’s trade with the UK was one of his priorities and he would welcome British support in this regard.

The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Pakistan is an informal cross-party group in the British Parliament that works for improving ties between the two countries and endeavours to benefit from the Parliamentary practices in each other’s countries. The APPG on Pakistan is run by Members of the Commons and Lords.
