Kazakhstan air force Mig-31 crashed, pilots survive

NUR-SULTAN, April 16 (Xinhua) — A MiG-31 military aircraft of the Kazakhstan Air Force crashed in central Kazakhstan’s Karaganda Region on Thursday, but the pilots survived, the defense ministry said in a statement.

The incident took place near the airport of Karaganda when the plane was on a scheduled flight preparing for combat duty.

One of the engines of the jet caught fire shortly after takeoff. The pilots flew the aircraft away from the residential area and then ejected, the statement said.

The pilots have been taken to the hospital, it added.

A commission has been set up to investigate.
