Boris Johnson elected Leader of the Conservative Party

(PR) Following a ballot of the Conservative Party membership, the Rt Hon Boris Johnson MP has been elected as Leader of the Conservative & Unionist Party.

There were 159, 320 eligible electors. Turnout was 87.4%

Jeremy Hunt received 46, 656 votes

Boris Johnson received 92, 153 votes

There were 509 rejected ballots.

The Rt Hon Dame Cheryl Gillan MP and Charles Walker OBE MP were the returning officers for the membership vote.

The independent Electoral Reform Services administered the ballot.

Commenting, Conservative Party Chairman the Rt Hon Brandon Lewis MP said:

“I’d like to congratulate Boris Johnson on his election as our new leader.

“This leadership contest has shown our party at its best, with sixteen strongly attended hustings across every region and nation of the UK, with hundreds of probing questions but a fair hearing for both candidates.

“I’d like to thank both candidates for their commitment to this process and the team here at CCHQ for putting on a superb contest.”
