Today the world’s agenda is focused on Covid-19. All infected countries are looking for ways to combat the pandemic. Azerbaijan has had its historical path in the fight against Coronavirus. This path is built on the mission together we are stronger. From the first days of the pandemic President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev appealed to people to fight together against Covid-19. As a result of well-thought-out state policy, preventive measures have been taken against the virus.
On the third of March 2020, all educational institutions in the country have been closed. Following these the mass events, weddings and banquets were postponed. The country gradually transitioned to a quarantine regime with the main purpose to protect human health. On March 19, 2020, for the first time in the history of Azerbaijan, the Fund to Support Fight Against Coronavirus was established. The basis of the Fund was set up on principles of the slogan “We are strong together”.
The Fund was established on the initiative of President Ilham Aliyev. Initially, the President and then the First Vice-President of the Republic of Azerbaijan donated their annual salaries to the fund. By the personal initiative many organizations, institutions, and individuals contributed to the Fund. #StayAtHome titled successful campaigns were implemented. One-time financial assistance was granted to low-income families and unemployed people by the state. All necessary supports and provision of needs people aged 65 years and over have been provided.
The Azerbaijani way to fight Covid-19 is to be united. Be stronger together, be united, and act together in following the rules and regulations were Azerbaijani message to the world on fighting against COVID-19.
Azerbaijan chaired an extraordinary Summit of the Cooperation Council of Turkic Speaking States on April 10. On May 4, 2020, the Non-Aligned Movement held an online summit of the Movement’s Contact Group in response to COVID-19 the Coronavirus upon the initiative Mr.Ilham Aliyev, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Chair of the Non-Aligned Movement.
Through video conference, President Ilham Aliyev briefed participants on the latest situation in the country and measures taken in Azerbaijan to combat Covid-19 and called on all countries to show solidarity and unity in the fight against the virus.
On May 7, 2020, the first modular hospital was opened in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, and fiver other modular hospitals are under construction. Azerbaijan extends the special quarantine regime until 31 May.
