England’s hopes of claiming a first RBS 6 Nations title under Stuart Lancaster were left resting on events in Paris after Italy were crushed beneath a deluge of tries at the Stadio Olimpico.

Having failed to overhaul Ireland’s superior points difference of plus 49, they require France to spoil Brian O’Driscoll’s international farewell if they are to be crowned champions.

But it wasn’t to be as Ireland held their nerve to beat France 22-20 and claim the 2014 Six Nations title, giving captain Brian O’Driscoll a fairytale end to his international career.
