Rory McIlroy has ended his relationship with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki, just days after the engaged couple sent out their wedding invitations. The 25-year-old golf champion released a statement explaining his surprise decision to split from Caroline, who is 23.
“There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people,” he said. “The problem is mine. The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realise that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails.
“I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we’ve had.” He continued: “I will not be saying anything more about our relationship in any setting.” The sporting couple, who were due to tie the knot in August, have been an item for over two years.
The former number one world golf champion proposed to Caroline (who is ranked at number 13 in the world in tennis) in December 2013, and she had been spotted showing off her impressive engagement ring in recent weeks.
The couple, who had been nicknamed Wozzilroy by sports fans, shared their engagement news on New Year’s Eve, with Rory stating: “I have a feeling it is going to be a great year.”
As well as this relationship woes, Rory is currently embroiled in a legal battle in Ireland with his former manager, regarding commissions from his lucrative sponsorship and endorsement deals.
