Manchester United misfit offered £8m escape

Everton have identified Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley as their top summer transfer target and are ready to pay £8m for the England international, according to The Times.

Cleverley has been the target of criticism from United fans during a turbulent season at Old Trafford, which ultimately cost David Moyes his job earlier this morning.

The 24-year-old is about to approach the final year of his United contract and Everton manager Roberto Martinez is primed to pounce, telling Everton chiefs that he can revive a stagnant career at Goodison Park if a summer deal goes through.

United’s plans in terms of player recruitment have been thrown into turmoil by today’s sacking, but The Times believe that it would take a bid of around £12m for Cleverley to become an Everton player this summer.

Ultimately the new United manager will have to sign off on the playmaker’s future, although with Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick both the wrong side of 30.

Everton also have deliberations to make in terms of midfield options, with current loan star Gareth Barry available for free at the close of the campaign but currently considering a lucrative switch to Major League Soccer.

Martinez would certainly be able to offer Cleverley more than the 17 Premier League starts he’s managed so far this term, with United waiting for a concrete offer before making any decision on the star’s future.
