Coronation Street has cast newcomer Sair Khan as Kal Nasir’s daughter Alya.
Personal trainer Khalid ‘Kal’ Nasir, played by Jimi Mistry, joined the ITV soap at the end of last year, and it was previously announced his relatives would join him – introducing the first Muslim family to the cobbles.
Sair, 26, from Leeds, said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be joining the cast of Coronation Street. As a northerner, I’ve grown up watching the show and so can’t quite believe that I’ll soon be walking on the famous cobbles.”
University graduate Alya is set to make life difficult for Kal (Jimi Mistry) when she arrives in June, and is promised to ” immediately ruffle a few feathers with her outspoken nature and bubbly personality”.
Her arrival will coincide with that of widower Kal’s son and mother, who are yet to be cast.
Assistant producer Ella Kelly added: “We’re delighted to introduce Sair as Alya, the new strong-minded member of the Nazir family, who puts temptation in the path of one male resident, causing a storm before her feet have even hit the cobbles.”
Producer Stuart Blackburn said earlier this year: “We’ve already established that Kal’s son and daughter both live with Kal’s mum and dad, so we’re going to bring them onto the Street. It’ll be the first Muslim family that Corrie has ever had.”
Kal’s dad Sharif, played by former Emmerdale actor Marc Anwar, appeared on the street in February when he lent Kal money to help fund the gym business he has set up with Dev Alahan, played by Jimmi Harkishin.
