LONDON, (Xinhua) — Chelsea suffered their third straight defeat in the English Premier League as they were beaten by hosts Stoke 1-0 on Saturday.
The defending champions were without their under-fire manager Jose Mourinho who was banned from the stadium for his behavior toward match officials in his side’s 2-1 defeat at West Ham in October.
It was the Chelsea’s seventh loss in 12 league matches, which left the Blues to drop to a lowly 16th place and Mourinho’s job in serious danger.
Marko Arnautovic scored the winner in the 53rd minute with an acrobatic finish.
Chelsea, who seemed to have revived their winning form after beating Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League on Wednesday, pushed forward in desperate search of an equalizer and Pedro was very close to scoring in the 67th minute. But his left-foot effort hit the post.
At Old Trafford, Manchester United ended their goal drought with a 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion. Jesse Lingard scored his first goal in a Man United shirt.
Lingard broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute with a curling shot from 20 meters. Juan Mata added a penalty in the 91st minute after Gareth McAuley had been sent off for bringing down Anthony Martial.
“Everybody knows who has played football that the most difficult way to score is against a very defensive team,” Van Gaal said after the match. “You need patience. In the second half West Brom are more tired and the chances come.”
Jamie Vardy scored for the ninth consecutive league match as Leicester beat Watford 2-1. He will level former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record if he scores in the next match.
