Spain has reached a deal with the European Union on Gibraltar, clearing the way for an EU summit on Sunday to approve a Brexit deal with British Prime Minister Theresa May, a diplomatic source said on Saturday.
“Negotiations went on through the night with Spain and Britain. In a telephone conversation just now (European Council President Donald) Tusk and (Spanish Prime Minister Pedro) Sanchez reached an agreement on Gibraltar.”
“The summit will go ahead,” it added.
Sanchez said the same day that a deal had been reached on Gibraltar and any future decisions regarding Gibraltar would be made with Spain.
“We have reached an agreement on Gibraltar,” he said.
Sanchez had on Friday threatened to boycott the summit, which aims to sign off on the terms of Britain’s withdrawal from the EU in March.
